About FMS
Our name reflects our business which is primarily providing services to the mortgage industry. I say primarily because in delivering these services we are constantly finding ways in which the services and systems we develop can be utilised for more than just the servicing of mortgages.
Perhaps the best way to describe what we do is to say that we enjoy working with our partners to bring efficiencies and productivity to that unseen part of a bank or financial institution, the lending services back office. We achieve this because we have made it our passion to understand IT systems, workflow management and document processing and develop systems and services that make the back office hum. We also bring with us a knowledge and understanding of the law of mortgages that helps us make these systems effective.
Most businesses will use words like innovative, experienced, client oriented and versatile to describe their services. They are all applicable to us too but we feel more comfortable with being described as a collaborative, cooperative and capable problem solving partner that helps our clients achieve great things.
We haven’t put our name up in lights or sought industry accolades for we get our satisfaction by standing behind our clients and helping them build their business and enjoy the accolades that come with their success.
In Australia one of the clients for whom we provide the complete lending services back office for a reverse mortgage business has won top industry awards for the last three years in a row. In New Zealand, we have provided since its inception, documentation and settlement services to the bank that has won Bank of the year for the last 4 years running.
In 2004 we responded to a request from a client to assist them to establish a reverse mortgage business. We developed internally, a fully web enabled mortgage administration system that seamlessly administers a reverse mortgage from receipt of loan application through until the mortgage is repaid and discharged. That client now provides reverse mortgages in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Spain. All of which are currently administered on our system. While we can’t take any credit for our client’s products and awards, we can take credit for allowing them to focus on developing the key parts of their business and leaving the back office for us to look after. They weren’t kept awake at nights worrying about how they would cope with the volumes they hoped to create – we took that worry from them.

WHERE DID WE COME FROM?
Where FMS is today is very much a function of where we came from.
In 2000, Jonathan Flaws was a senior partner in the banking law department of a leading commercial law firm in New Zealand. He became aware of Title Insurance, a product offered by overseas companies in the First American family of companies and determined that the product could make a real difference. He identified the service as being able to make a real difference to the way refinanced mortgages in New Zealand were documented, signed and settled.
With the support and technical assistance of the law firm and its IT department, he established the business that in September 2001 became the forerunner of First Mortgage Services.
The New Zealand bank of the year for the last four years in a row adopted and promoted a refinancing service to its customers under which the bank is covered for a number of property law risks by a title insurance policy.
One of the strengths of FMS comes from the fact that it has a solid grounding in understanding the legal issues that relate to mortgages. It is able to review systems and services from the legal as well as the processing perspective.
In November 2007, FMS was acquired by First American International, Inc. This gave it access to a world of experience and systems in the real estate and mortgage industry. Today it is working on innovative developments for deployment in the Australasian market that it has sourced from the First American family of companies.
It is this access to international expertise through FMS that can provide you with the ability to make your business more efficient.
